The Minister of Interior, Retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Muhammadu Maccido. He enjoined all Muslims and Nigerians in general to support and join hands with President Muhammadu Buhari in his sustained efforts to diversify the economy and progressively accelerate the pace of economic recovery.

 Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is to take personal charge of the country’s crucial oil portfolio, his spokesman said on Tuesday, as a deadline loomed for him to finally nominate his cabinet. Reports from New York, where Buhari has been attending the UN General Assembly, quoted the president as saying he would be minister of petroleum resources, with a junior minister taking charge of day-to-day affairs in the sector.

Tafawa-Balewa withdraws from PDP presidential race

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa, has said he is no longer interested in challenging President Goodluck Jonathan for the party’s ticket. The PDP presidential aspirant, who is the son of a former Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, said he had withdrawn his intention to run for the Presidential primary.

Converted to Islam and married off ... despite the claims and counterclaims the fate of more than 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram on April 14 remains as unclear as ever. On October 17, Nigerian officials announced they had reached a ceasefire deal with Boko Haram that included the girls' release. Hassan Tukur, principal secretary to President Goodluck Jonathan said the deal followed a month of negotiations with representatives of the group in Chad. "We have agreed on the release of the Chibok schoolgirls, and we expect to conclude on that at our next meeting with the group's representative next week in Chad," he said. The announcement revived hopes the girls' would be released and reawakened the #BringBackOurGirls hashtag on Twitter.

FIFA Suspends Cameroon’s Football Association

The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) on Thursday announced the provisional suspension of the Cameroonian Football Association (FECAFOOT) from the international game with immediate effect. In a statement on its website, FIFA’s Emergency Committee said it took the decision on account of government interference and based on articles 13 and 17 of the FIFA Statutes.
