FIFA Suspends Cameroon’s Football Association
The Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) on Thursday announced the provisional suspension of the Cameroonian Football Association (FECAFOOT) from the international game with immediate effect.
In a statement on its website, FIFA’s Emergency Committee said it took the decision on account of government interference and based on articles 13 and 17 of the FIFA Statutes.
It added that a normalisation committee would be set up to revise the FECAFOOT Statutes and organise elections for new officials by March 31, 2014.
``Articles 13 and 17 of the FIFA Statutes oblige member-associations to manage their affairs independently and with no influence from third parties.
``A normalisation committee will be set up as provided under article 7 paragraph 2 of the FIFA Statutes to revise the FECAFOOT Statutes.
``It will also organise elections for new office bearers by March 31, 2014, and at the same time manage the daily business,’’ the statement said.
It added that the FIFA administration, in co-operation with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), would identify and nominate the members for the normalisation committee.
``The normalisation committee will act as an electoral body, whose decisions will be final and binding, and its members will not be eligible for any of the open positions,’’ the statement read further.
It added that during the period of suspension, FECAFOOT would not be represented in any regional, continental or international competitions, including at club level, or in friendly matches
``Neither FECAFOOT nor any of its members or officials may benefit from any FIFA or CAF development programmes, courses or training during the suspension period.
``But the suspension will be lifted once the country’s authorities allow the new normalisation committee to enter the FECAFOOT headquarters and to carry out its activities unhindered,’’ the statement said.
