Guinness enters world record with Eagles’ jersey
In recognition of its suport for the Super Eagles, Guinness Nigeria Plc has been officially recognised by Guinness World Record by setting a new world record for the largest football jersey. The Guinness World Record certificate has consequently been presented to the brewing company.
The football jersey was part of the move by the company to draw suuport for the Super Eagles before, during and after the Africa Cup of Nations held in South Africa. The idea, enabled Nigerians to send goodwill messages to the team while in South Africa.
The campaign, tagged, “Fly with the Eagles” had the largest jersey unveiled at the Teslim Balogun, Surulere, Lagos and the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, in a bid to drum up support for the Super Eagles in their quest for victory at the tournament.
The jersey, which measured an amazing record size of 240.3ft to 294.2 ft, set a new world record as the largest football jersey in history, beating the last record held at a size of 234ft1 inch by 259ft 8inch and displayed in Sukru, San Istanbul in 2009.
According to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Guinness Nigeria Plc Seni Adetu who described the feat as a case of double joy for the country, added that the company was highly elated to have greatly contributed to this success, putting the country on the world map once again.
He said, ”Initially, there are doubts on whether we have broken the world record, however, today I am proud to present to you the Guinness World Record Certificate for the largest football shirt in the world.”
About 40,000 fans inscribed their goodwill messages on the jersey laid at Teslim Balogun Stadium during the AFCON tournament as they wished the team victory at every stage of the tournament,” he said.
The Marketing and Innovation Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr Austin Ufomba, appreciated the support of the duo of Lagos State governor Babatunde Fasola and Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi for allowing the company the use of their stadium facilities, saying,”it was, indeed, an honour bestowed on not just Guinness but the over 160 million fans of footall that stood by the Eagles throughout the tournament,” Ufomba said.
He thus informed that the jrsey was measured by quantity surveying firm, Billings Cost Associates and was vetted by renowned audit firm Alexander Forbes to authenticate the claim that it was real.
